Five
Elements Acupuncture
The Five Elements
Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood -- represent a central aspect
of this ancient energetic tradition. Each of the Elements represents
a distinct “quality” of the Qi energy as it cycles
through nature and the seasons, and through our own lives. The
element Fire, for example, is associated with qualities such as
the warmth of summer, the color red, rising or expanding energy,
joy, laughter and a scorched odor.
Each of the Elements has its own distinct associations, and
each has an important role to play in everything we do, think
and feel. The extent to which we live according to their natural
laws is the extent to which we live in health.
When the energies of the Five Elements are functioning in harmony
and balance within ourselves, we feel healthy, nourished and
fully alive. When the elements move out of balance, we may feel
a reduced sense of well-being, and we may develop symptoms of
various sorts. Symptoms can and do show up at any level -- not
just in our body, but also in our mind, in our emotions or in
our spirit.
Students of Academy for Five Element Acupuncture are trained,
first and foremost, in the ancient and subtle energetic wisdom
of the Five Elements. The skills of diagnosis and treatment
are learned principally by observing and following the laws
of the natural world. The natural cycles of birth, growth, maturation
and death represent a perfect model for health and well-being,
one which is rooted in traditional Taoist philosophy.
THE ROLE OF PRACTITIONER
As practitioners of acupuncture and traditional Chinese herbal
medicine, our aim is to treat a person holistically. The Five
Element approach aims to find and treat the root of an illness,
thereby helping to restore the overall balance of energy. The
Five Element practitioner uses various diagnostic techniques
to detect the root cause of imbalances in the energy, and then
influences the Qi through specific treatment so that it returns
to its natural flow. When this happens, symptoms and illnesses
disappear.
Five Element practitioners look at disease not just as pathology
in the Western medical sense, but also as a signpost that points
the way to our own transformation. Our deepest places of vulnerability
and weakness can also be our deepest places of virtue and strength.
By working with the elemental root of imbalance the practitioner
guides the energy back toward its healthiest and highest potential,
healing in accordance with natural laws.
FIVE ELEMENTS ACUPUNCTURE ORAL TRADITION
At its origins, Five Element acupuncture is an oral tradition.
Transmitted through experience and example, it is based on learning
through the senses. While the basics of the didactic work are
written down, the majority of the learning involves developing
the heart, the intuition and the senses of the practitioner
as a complement to the analytical process. As part of this process,
students’ self-development and inner work become an important
part of becoming a practitioner.
